Ningbo Customs Intercepts 1,750 Foreign Scrap Tires
The inspection and quarantine administration of Beilun district, Ningbo city, Zhejiang province, discovered 1,750 scrap tires of about 6 tonnes in a container, which was reported to be empty, from Malta.
Investigation shows that the container was actually a loaded one and was misreported to be empty by a foreign port. The administration returned the container after fumigation.
Scrap tire has been acknowledged as hazardous waste internationally and it harms the environment severe.
Over the past few years, such situation as cargos, pests, used clothing and scrap tires being discovered in “empty” containers happened frequently. The port in Beilun intercepted 32,300 issues or epidemics brought about by “empty” containers in 2015 and the cases are on the rise.
