Tire Pressure Monitoring System to be Standard Configuration of Vehicles

It is reported that about 30% traffic accidents in China were caused by explosion resulting from low-tire-pressure-led friction or from high tire pressure, and as many as 50% traffic accidents occurred on highways were caused by tire pressure.

Therefore, relevant authorities had worked on mandatory national standards for automotive tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). After three years’ discussion, more than 70 representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Standardization Administration, and the National Technical Committee of Auto Standardization worked out on Sept. 27 the Performance Requests and Testing Rules for Tire Pressure Monitoring System of Passenger Cars (GB26149), signifying that autos to be sold in China’s domestic market have to carry with TPMS before long.

TPMS should be Standard Configuration

TPMS is a positive auto security system that gives early warning.

It is capable of ensuring the pressure and temperature of a tire staying within a standard range, reducing the probability of a blowout and damage, and lowering fuel consumption and preventing damage of auto parts.

An industry expert estimated that in 2015, China’s petroleum consumption was 114 million tons. If the tire pressures of passenger cars are kept well, about 1.01 million tons of petroleum, valued at 7.6 billion yuan, will be saved.

Accordingly, with respect to auto safety and energy consumption, TPMS should be a standard auto system as air bag and ABS.

Application in China and Overseas

Over the past few years, thanks to vigorous development of China’s auto industry, an increasing number of car makers equipped their mid -end products with TPMS.

In the field of automotive aftermarket, more car owners installed TPMS.

But lacking of mandatory national request makes TPMS application in China’s domestic market still rare.

Experts estimated that in 2013, global demand for TPMS was 29.39 million sets, with an installation rate of 33.67%.

With increasing penetration of TPMS in the EU and other regions, the demand in 2017 may reach 54.77 million sets, up 15% year on year with an installation rate of over 50%.

In the Chinese market, the demand for pre-installation in 2011 was a bit more than one million sets and that in 2013 increased to 2.47 million sets, growing much faster than the global market.
