China’s automobile population amounts to 270 million units as of June 2020

China's motor vehicle population reached roughly 360 million units by the end of June 2020, of which 270 million units are automobiles, according to China's the Ministry of Public Security.

Besides, there have been 4.17 million NEVs running on roads, around 360,000 units more than the level achieved as of December 31, 2019. Motorcycles accounted for 19.14% of the current motor vehicle population. 

A total of 14.14 million motor vehicles were newly registered during the first six months, 980,000 units fewer than that of the year-ago period.

The registrations of automobiles occurred for the first half of the year added up to 10.42 million units, which dropped by 2 million units compared to the same period a year ago. However, a total of 3.325 million motorcycles were newly registered from January to June, rising 885,000 units from a year earlier.

The population of trucks hit a record high of 29.44 million units as of June, of which 18.8 million units were newly licensed during the first two quarters. 

There have been 69 cities in China whose respective automobile population exceeds 1 million units, three cities more than the prior-year period. Notably, 12 cities in total—Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Tianjin and Qingdao—have all gotten over 3 million automobiles running on roads.

The number of motor vehicle drivers has added up to 440 million by June 2020, 7.28 million of them just obtained driving licenses this year. As of today, China has had 400 million persons that hold the automobile driving permission.
