Bridgestone to conduct record recall on over 1 million defective tires

Bridgestone will recall more than one million truck and bus tires due to possible cracks in the sidewalls.

The to-be-recalled 1,204,707 truck and bus tires were manufactured between Jan. 2012 and Aug. this year.

The recall report showed that at least 40 different types of tires may have fissures in their sidewalls, which may lead to air leaking and a loss of pressure in the tires.

Bridgestone said recall and safety measures will be followed in line with the respective safety standards of each country for the 100,000 tires with potential defects that have already been sold overseas.

The current recall marks the largest the company has faced since the system of recalling tires was introduced in Japan in 2004.

Despite the tiremaker's latest stumbling block, Brigestone said its net profits for the fiscal third quarter, ended Sept. 30, almost doubled on year.

The company said that due to the yen's depreciation and lower purchasing costs for raw materials, the tire maker managed to secure net profits of 78.8 billion yen (around 800 million U.S. dollars) in the July-September period, compared with a year- earlier profit of 40.6 billion yen.
