Beijing: emission is a main source of PM2.5

According to statistics of Beijing’s environment authority, this capital city has witnessed a 30% emission reduction and a drop of 20%-25% in PM 2.5 level since the implement of practices under China’s emergency response system right after a red alert for heavy air pollution.

Dawei Zhang, director of Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center, said Beijing has effected several emergency measures to tackle this situation right after the red alert and among all the measures, the odd and even license plate policy(a road space rationing policy in Beijing) contributed most for the emission reduction and PM 2.5 level drop.

During this 90 hours red alert, the density of PM2.5, airborne particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter, averaged 150 micrograms per cubic meters with a peak reading of 421 micrograms per cubic meters at 8pm in this 22th for the whole city. To be noted, a monitoring site located in southwestern Beijing has read a density of 831 micrograms per cubic meters during the night of 21th.
