EV pulls back with lack of insurance regulations, charging standard, collision test

With the surging development of EV in China, EVs have been used by increasingly more consumers and some weaknesses have emerged in the usage.

Three major weaknesses are considered the lack of insurance regulations on EV industry, the miss of one unified standard of EV charging station and the blank in the collision test.

Currently, there are no related EV insurance regulations assuring the security of passengers and drivers, which also leads to commercial insurance company imposing arbitrary and service charges. For example, the commercial insurance corporations offer no insurance on EV batteries so that consumers cannot get any claim on their batteries’ default. These troubles in the latter insurance claim might turn EV buyers into gasoline-vehicle purchasers.

Though some buyers contain the mentioned problem, they will be troubled by the charging convenience. An array of charging piles with different charging interface existed in Chinese market, namely Combo Connector and GB/T 20234, leaving much inconvenience for drivers to recharge their EVs. GB/T 20234, adopted nationwide, however, only set a rough range on EV charging plug sockets, interface and other basic sections. With key technical parameters including voltage and power in disunities, Chinese EV users are deeply troubled in charging. The further development in EV market will stay retarded until the new specific national standard for EV charging comes into force.

C-NCAP (China-New Car Assessment Program), the only new vehicle collision test in China, covers no EV quality examination. It is still uncertain that if EV collision test will be added into the program. The lack EV collision test couldn’t cast a clear safety performance picture for EV purchasers, and couldn’t urge automakers to upgrade their EV quality.

These three lacks in insurance regulations, charging standard and collision test in a way pull back the further development of EV industry.
