China PV wholesales in Jan. 2021

In January 2021, the wholesale volume of China's locally-produced PVs (referring to cars, MPVs, SUVs and minibuses) amounted to 2.040 million units, jumping 26.1% year on year, while falling 13.5% month on month, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

As of Jan. 2021, China has seen its monthly PV wholesales grow year over year for nine months in a row.

The month-on-month decrease in wholesales partly stemmed from the occurrence of sporadic coronavirus cases that whittled down dealerships’ confidence and the relatively low wholesale target OEMs set for dealers, said the CPCA.

Apart from the minibus, the car, the MPV and the SUV segments all achieved double-digit growth compared to the year-ago period.

Wuling Hongguang MPV drops from top 10 PV list

Among the top 10 China-made PV models by Jan. wholesales, there were seven car models and three SUV models. Notably, the Wuling Hongguang, previously a frequenter for the top 10 PV models, failed to enter the list last month. It was even no longer the best-selling MPV model. With a wholesale volume of 8,207 units, it was outsold by the Buick GL8 (17,790 units) and the Wuling Victory (10,117 units).

However, SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) still had one model, namely the Hongguang MINIEV, among the top 10 PV models. Compared to the previous month, its wholesales vigorously grew 14.53%.

Aside from the Hongguang MINIEV and the Corolla, the other eight PV models all obtained two-digit year-on-year growth.

Most models on top 10 car list achieve year-on-year growth in Jan.

For the month of Jan. 2021, China's homegrown car wholesales leapt 30.8% over a year earlier to over 970,000 units, according to the CPCA.

Among the top 10 car models, there were only two models—the Honguang MINIEV and the Emgrand—were from Chinese indigenous brands.

The Sylphy was still the hottest-selling one for both car and PV rankings. Its wholesales surged 55.4% from the previous year to 57,977 units thanks to its stylish exterior, comfortable interior layout, and more importantly, a sales channel available for both old and new generations.

Volkswagen brand had four models on the top 10 car list. Three of them, namely the Sagitar, the Bora and the Magotan, were from FAW-Volkswagen. However, SAIC Volkswagen's Lavida boasted the best sales performance.

Audi Q5 enters top 10 SUV list as only luxury model

The CPCA said the SUV wholesales volume reached nearly 970,000 units in January, rising 24.2% year over year, while shrinking 14% month over month.

All top 10 SUV models by Jan. wholesales posted double-digit increase over the prior-year period and four of them were from China's self-owned brands.

Haval's H6 maintained the honor as the best-selling SUV model. It also enjoyed an impressive year-on-year hike of 75.5%.

Changan Auto's CS75 was the occupant of the runner-up place. It was also one of the two models whose Jan. wholesale exceeded 40,000 units.

It is worth mentioning that the Audi Q5 entered the top 10 SUV list as the only luxury model. Meanwhile, it was also the fastest-growing one with a sales leap of 91%.
