Chinese SUV sales from March to April

According to China Passenger Car Association statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese), four of the 10 top-selling SUV models sold in China during the month of April 2016 were made by domestic own brand manufacturers. By comparison, seven of the top 10 best-selling models from the month of March were made by own brands.

The Great Wall Haval H6 remained the top-selling SUV model of the month. Despite achieving year-on-year sales growth of 42.8%, its sales fell 4.6% from the previous month. Taking the number two and three spots were GAC Trumpchi GS4 and SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojun 560, the latter of which whose sales fell 40.7% from the previous month. The five-seat Baojun 560’s declining performance was in part due to the newly-released seven-seat Changan CX70, whose competitive price point of 68,900 RMB to 84,900 RMB ($10,517-$12,959) has made it very appealing in comparison to the slightly more expensive Baojun 560’s. Although the CX70’s sales for last month was just over 4,200 units, already over 30,000 pending new orders have been made for the new SUV.

Only four models, namely the Buick Envision, VW Tiguan, Honda XR-V and Honda Vezel, managed to post positive monthly sales growth rates in April, with the XR-V’s sales increasing a full 32.1% from the previous month.
