Growth in the Chinese sedan market has slowed down over the past few years, with sales of midsizes being the major driving force. According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), midsizes made up 60.6 percent of the 1.24 million sedans sold over the first two months of the year, up 2.0 percent points from a year ago.
According to statistics, German automobiles accounted for most sedans sold in China over the first two months of the year, followed by own brands, American, Japanese and Korean vehicles. Sales volumes for German sedans was 392,700 units, followed by 312,800 units, 201,100 units, 141,800 units and 105,000 units for own brands, American, Japanese and Korean vehicles. Own brand sedans achieved the highest year-on-year sales growth rate of 8.9 percent, followed by 7.5 percent for German sedans and 1.8 percent for Japanese ones.
German models made up the top four of the entries in the top ten sedan sales charts: VW’s Lavida, Santana, Jetta and Sagitar. Despite the fact that VW Lavida’s sales fell over the two months of the year, its sales record of 75,800 units was still enough to keep it at the top of the charts.
Over the first two months of the year, own brands managed to achieve a 25.3 percent share in the sedan market. The Geely Emgrand EC7 and Changan Eado were the best-selling own brand sedans over the first two months of the year. However their sales volumes of 39,300 units and 39,000 units are far behind those of foreign brand sedans.
Although Japanese sedan sales grew, Japanese manufacturers’ market share still decreased to 11.5 percent. The Toyota Corolla, Toyota Levin and Mazda3 Axela were among the major Japanese vehicles, whose sales volumes totaled 26,200 units, 14,100 units and 13,500 units, respectively.
American and Korean sedan sales on the whole fell, with their respective shares in the Chinese sedan market falling to 16.2 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively.
The VW Lavida was the best-selling sedan for the January to February time span, followed by the VW Santana, VW Jetta, VW Sagitar, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Cruze, Buick Excelle, Geely Emgrand EC7 and Changan Eado.
