Compact SUV sales in October

According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 631,295 SUVs sold in China in October, representing year-on-year growth of 62.2%. Among them 59.0% of these sales were of compact SUVs, totaling 372,330 units.

The compact SUV segment in October was led by the Great Wall Haval H6. It was followed by the SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojun 560, GAC Trumpchi GS4, VW Tiguan, Changan CS75, Honda CR-V, BYD S3, Nissan X-Trail, Ford Kuga and Hyundai ix35. The Baojun 560 and Trumpchi GS4, two newly-released models, performed especially strongly. Steady positive year-on-year growth rates were common throughout the segment.

Domestic own brand models accounted for 56.1% of all SUVs sold in the country over the month of October. Own brands’ performance in the compact SUV segment was particularly astounding, with half of the models on the top ten sales chart, including all of the top three, coming from own brands.

The Great Wall Haval H6 once again led the segment in October, with total sales of 37,541 units, up 23.6% from the previous year. Sales of the Haval H6 from January to October totaled 290,365 units, representing year-on-year growth of 14.5%. The Haval H6 leads its competitors by a sales margin of well over 10,000 units.

Two new models, the Baojun 560 and Trumpchi GS4, posted astounding sales figures for the month of October. Sales of the Baojun 560 increased from 9,158 units in its debut month of July, to 17,128 units and 24,228 units in August and September. The Baojun 560’s sales in October totaled 30,226 units, bringing the model’s total sales since its launch to just over 80,000 units. Meanwhile, the GS4, whose sales in October totaled 21,052 units, initially exceeded the 10,000 unit mark in June, a month after its launch in May.

Two other own brands whose October sales performances are worth mentioning were the Changan CS75 and BYD S3. Sales of the two models totaled 17,948 units and 16,136 units, representing year-on-year growth of 73.5% and 72.8%, respectively.

On the other side of the charts, the VW Tiguan was the leading foreign branded model, with a total of 20,289 units sold this October, up a slight 0.8% from the 20,119 units sold the previous October. The Honda CR-V and Nissan X-Trail, whose sales volumes for the month totaled 16,790 units and 15,519 units, were able to post respective year-on-year sales growth rates of 18.7% and 33.3%. Further down the charts were the Ford Kuga and Nissan X-Trail, whose monthly sales totaled 11,997 units and 11,930 units, representing year-on-year growth rates of 5.7% and 3.6%. Sales of the ix35 have been constantly growing since the beginning of the year, while sales growth of the Kuga increased only in June, September and October this year.
