Profile of China's Pickup in 2011

After pickup truck firstly appearing inAmericain 1910s, pickup truck becomes a very popular and common vehicle inAmericaat present, and also an emblem of American Modern Cowboy Culture.

With sales prosperity inAmerica, pickup truck starts accepted by other countries in the world, such as North America, Southeast Asia,Oceaniaand so on.

Nowadays, there are about 4.1 million trucks sold in the world every year. Amongst, there are over 1.6 million trucks sold inAmericain 2010, which takes 40% of global sales; about 380,000 trucks sold inChina, taking 9% of total sales.

 

Due to culture difference in Eastern and Western Society,  there are different production demand in different areas. In North America, trucks (large-size) are popularized because of its wide body, high chassis and strong power; In China andSoutheast Asia, pickup trucks (light-size) are more favorite by its compact body and saving energy.

 

 

Pickup inChina

InChina, pickup truck is managed and taxed as van, which limits pickup trucks' development. However, thanks toChina's auto subsidiary policy, sales of pickup trucks rapidly grew to 394,000 vehicles in 2011.

 

  

At present, pickup takes small proportion in commercial vehicle market, but growth of pickup sales is much higher than of commercial vehicle sales. In 2011, pickup’s share in commercial vehicle market increased to 6.3% from2009’s 4.9%.

 

 

China’s top 4 pickup brands are Greatwall, Zhenzhou Nissan, Jiangling Motors, Zhongxing Auto, which take over 70% of market share for a long time.

 

But, with pickup sales’ rapid growth, FAW-GM, JAC and Volks Wagon also plan to take part in the competition.

 

 

Pickup growth factor

InChina, pickup consumers are mainly located inGuangdong Province,ZhejiangProvince,FujianProvince,Inner Mongolia,HunanProvince and so on.

 

InGuangdong Province,ZhejiangProvince andFujianProvince, pickup market is nearly oversaturated. But it is believed that people in Middle Western China and second or third level market will become a large potential pickup buyers in the future.

 

 

Combing with functions of passenger vehicle and commercial vehicles, pickup truck will get a rapid growth chance via personal consumption in the near future, industrial experts said.

 

Following SUV and sedan's development trail, 2009 might be pichup consumption's new era, he said.

 

Pickup forecast in 2012

Suffering fromChina’s slowdown economy and sluggish auto market, pickup market also yearly decreased in the first half year.
